ISSN 0323–1046 The main factors influencing spatial and temporal variations in soil respiration were investigated in 5 sampling plots distributed along an altitudinal gradient in the Sierra de Guadarrama, Spain. Soil CO2 fluxes were measured at each site every week with a closed dynamic system (LI-COR 6400) using soil collars during the summer. At the same time, soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm and soil water content were measured at each collar. Soil respiration declined during the summer synchronized with the continuous decrease in soil moisture. However, the seasonal variation of soil respiration during this period was decoupled with the temporal variation in soil temperature. The spatial variation of soil respiration across the plots might be a consequence of the influence of local topography on microclimatic conditions.

Temporal variability of water fluxes in a Pinus sylvestris forest patch in Mediterranean mountain conditions (Vallcebre research catchments, Catalan Pyrenees)
The Vallcebre research catchments are representative of Mediterranean mountain areas with spontaneous afforestation by Pinus sylvestris as a consequence of the abandonment of agriculture since the 1950s. In this context, transpiration, rainfall interception and internal fluxes in a Scots pine patch have been monitored. This paper presents the results obtained on temporal variability of these wa...
متن کاملImpact of Drought on the Intra-Annual Growth of Pinus sylvestris L
Climatic scenarios for the Mediterranean Region forecast increasing frequency and intensity of drought events. We analyzed how Pinus sylvestris modifies its cambial phenology and intra-annual growth under enhanced drought conditions. For this purpose, a rainfall exclusion experiment was applied in 2012 to trees located in the lower elevation limit of a mountain forest in Central Spain. Prelimin...
متن کاملMushroom biomass and diversity are driven by different spatio-temporal scales along Mediterranean elevation gradients
Mushrooms are important non-wood-forest-products in many Mediterranean ecosystems, being highly vulnerable to climate change. However, the ecological scales of variation of mushroom productivity and diversity, and climate dependence has been usually overlooked due to a lack of available data. We determined the spatio-temporal variability of epigeous sporocarps and the climatic factors driving t...
متن کاملComparative Drought Responses of Quercus ilex L. and Pinus sylvestris L. in a Montane Forest Undergoing a Vegetation Shift
Different functional and structural strategies to cope with water shortage exist both within and across plant communities. The current trend towards increasing drought in many regions could drive some species to their physiological limits of drought tolerance, potentially leading to mortality episodes and vegetation shifts. In this paper, we study the drought responses of Quercus ilex and Pinus...
متن کاملDiverging Drought Resistance of Scots Pine Provenances Revealed by Infrared Thermography
With recent climate changes, Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) forests have been affected by die-off events. Assisted migration of adapted provenances mitigates drought impacts and promotes forest regeneration. Although suitable provenances are difficult to identify by traditional ecophysiological techniques, which are time consuming and invasive, plant water status can be easily assessed by inf...
